The work

A design project, not a catalog order

The wedding cake occupies a particular place in celebration design. It serves as both a visual focal point and a shared culinary experience, witnessed by your guests and preserved in your wedding photography. At Marin Cake Studio, we approach wedding cakes as design projects that warrant the same attention you have given to other elements of your celebration.

Based in San Rafael, our studio has been creating custom wedding cakes for Marin County and Bay Area clients since 2016. Each order begins with understanding your aesthetic direction, your event setting, and what you hope your cake will communicate about your celebration. Nothing is booked until both the design and the flavors are settled, because a cake you were talked into is a cake nobody enjoys on the day.

Our wedding work demonstrates range within a consistent philosophy: every cake should reflect the couple it was made for — the venue, the palette, and the detail that survives being photographed. Whether you are planning a Marin County estate wedding, a San Francisco venue celebration, or an intimate gathering elsewhere in the Bay Area, our approach remains the same.

How we design a wedding cake

Collaborative, not catalog

Wedding cake design at Marin Cake Studio is collaborative rather than catalog-based. We do not offer tiered packages or fixed design options to choose from. Instead, each wedding cake involves developing a design specifically for your celebration.

Flexible by design

This approach allows for greater flexibility in technique, proportion, color selection, and decorative elements. When you order a wedding cake from our studio, you are engaging in a design process that begins with your vision and concludes with a cake created to realize that vision.

Either starting point works

Some couples arrive with clear aesthetic direction—specific color palettes, technique preferences, or design references. Others begin with general impressions and develop clarity through the consultation process. Both approaches work well. What matters is allowing sufficient time for thoughtful design development rather than rushing toward a decision.

A wide reference set

Our design work draws on botanical illustration, textile patterns and fine art, and spans five styles we design most often: garden and botanical florals, modern minimalist, romantic and elaborate, vintage-inspired, and modern geometric. We are equally comfortable executing modern minimalism and elaborate romantic designs, provided the direction emerges authentically from your aesthetic preferences rather than from trending styles.

About our wedding cakes

The Role of the Wedding Cake

The wedding cake functions simultaneously as decoration, dessert, and symbol. Your guests will see it displayed throughout your reception, photograph it extensively, and ultimately taste it. This multiplicity of purposes requires design decisions that consider both visual composition and culinary execution.

We create wedding cakes for clients who view this element as integral to their overall wedding aesthetic rather than as an obligatory tradition. The cake should feel cohesive with your venue selection, floral design, and the tone you have established for your celebration. It should look intentional rather than generic.

Our San Rafael studio has created wedding cakes for estate weddings, garden ceremonies, urban loft receptions, and intimate restaurant celebrations. Each required different design approaches based on setting, formality, and the couple's aesthetic preferences. The unifying factor across all our wedding work is attention to design integrity and execution quality.

The Design Process

Wedding cake orders follow our established studio process, adapted to accommodate the timeline and complexity of wedding planning.

Initial Consultation happens at our San Rafael studio or remotely, depending on your location and preference. We discuss your wedding date, venue, expected guest count, and aesthetic direction. Bring images of cakes you find compelling, color swatches from your wedding palette, or other visual references that communicate your taste. These materials help us understand your aesthetic language.

Flavor Selection happens through a tasting appointment at our studio. You experience actual cake flavors, filling options, and frosting styles rather than choosing from descriptions, and the flavor and filling menu is where that conversation starts. This removes ambiguity from flavor decisions and allows you to make selections based on direct experience.

Final Production happens in our studio kitchen in the days before your wedding. Every element is made by hand using techniques appropriate to your design. We maintain communication throughout production and coordinate delivery logistics with your venue.

Delivery and Setup is handled by our team. We arrive at your venue with adequate time to assemble, style, and ensure your cake is displayed as intended. Wedding cakes throughout Marin sets out the venues we work with and how delivery is arranged. Our team manages setup completely, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your wedding day.

Lindsay was great! We did a small cut cake and cupcakes for our reception and they all turned out just as I had hoped. She set everything up for us and it all looked perfect…

The consultation

A design process, start to finish

Some couples arrive with a clear palette and references. Others begin with impressions and find clarity through conversation. Both work — what matters is time for thoughtful design rather than rushing a decision.

Bring images you like, swatches from your palette, or just a description of how you want the day to feel. That is what we design from.

And if something will not work — a flavor that will not hold, a design that will not survive an outdoor afternoon in July — Lindsay will say so, and offer something that will.

Wedding cake questions

Do you offer delivery?

Marin Cake Studio delivers and sets up wedding cakes above a minimum order value, and confirms that minimum when the cake is quoted. Every other order — birthday cakes, cupcakes and cookies — is pick-up only, from the San Rafael studio.

How many servings will my cake provide, and how should I cut it?

Serving count depends on tier sizes and how the cake is cut, so we confirm the number for your specific design when we quote it. Tell us your guest count on the inquiry form and we will size the cake to it. Cutting instructions go out with every order at pickup or delivery.

What is your pick-up and delivery policy?

Once your order is picked up, Marin Cake Studio is not responsible for any damage to cakes, cupcakes or cookies once you have left our location. We recommend placing your cake flat on the floor of your vehicle or in the back of an SUV for safe transport. If you need help loading your order, please ask. For wedding cakes and cupcakes delivered to a venue, Marin Cake Studio is not responsible for any damage that occurs after delivery and setup. While we take every precaution to ensure safe delivery and setup, we cannot be held liable if the cake is moved by the venue staff, caterer, or someone from the wedding party. We take photos of all cake setups upon delivery for your reference.

How many guests will my cake serve?

A three- to four-tier cake usually serves around 100 people. We recommend the right size based on your guest count, whether you are serving other desserts, and how large you want the slices to be.

What if we are unsure about design direction?

This is normal and expected. Many couples begin with general aesthetic preferences rather than specific designs. During consultation, we discuss your taste, gather visual references, and help develop design direction.

What happens if we need to make changes?

We ask that your design and serving size be reviewed about one month before your wedding date. At that point, most RSVPs are in and we can still make adjustments as needed. After that timeframe, changes may be limited due to production scheduling, but we will do our best to accommodate reasonable requests when possible.

Can you recreate a design we found online?

We draw inspiration from designs you find compelling, but we create original work for each order rather than replicate existing cakes. This approach respects design originality while ensuring your cake is created specifically for you. Most clients appreciate having a unique piece rather than a reproduction.

Can fresh flowers be added to our cake?

Yes. We work with florists and can incorporate fresh flowers into cake design when appropriate. If you are providing flowers, we discuss food safety considerations and placement during the design phase. Coordination with your florist ensures proper execution.
